Now that paywalls are coming down all around like bricks from the Berlin Wall, the grab for audience share through free content just took a step-change jump.
Paid readers are now the cash cow to pay for long-term models based on free access to gain reach to readers, particularly those now used to not paying.
The down side? We’re all gonna ride the rollercoaster of revenue cyclicality along with the advertising/economic cycle unless we find other ways to diversify our revenue streams — selling more services to readers by leveraging our relationship with them to monetize it for example.
If there was an example of Schumpeterian competition, this is going to be it!
Your site better be good or your brand will having a tickling clock hanging over it.
