Local conundrum solution

Peter Wilby is right to be gloomy about the local press as things are.

Cut after cut has left the few journalists left chained to their desks, frantically churning press releases into copy which looks like a photocopier created it.

Real, exciting stories? I haven’t seen one in my local, Johnston-owned, rag for a long, long time. But I don’t blame the journalists there too much – they clearly struggle to fill it with what little there is left after their daily rival has hoovered up and reported anything of any worth.

Why they aren’t completely off the hook is that they seem to make no attempt to get away from the traditional news agenda to do something they can be good at, something no-one else does and which people will buy them for.

That’s what we did in Kendal and Southport and it worked in both places. And that was with frees. Imagine the kind of sale a paid-for could generate if only it bothered to find its own market space and really exploited it.
